In films and TV shows, one of the first challenges for anyone who becomes a parent or looks after a baby is changing the baby's diaper. While this may seem difficult, with the right tips and attention to detail, it becomes a routine task that can be easily managed. New moms, dads, and caregivers can follow our diaper-changing guidelines.
Prepare Your Materials
To change your baby's diaper, you'll need several materials. Make sure you have everything ready before starting the change. Searching for items while the diaper is off or the baby is on the changing table will make things harder. You'll need a clean diaper, alcohol-free baby wipes or cotton and water, a changing mat or changing table, diaper cream, and baby lotion. Gather all of these materials together before beginning.
Choose the Right Location
Pick a place where both you and your baby can be comfortable during the diaper change. Some parents prefer using a changing table, while others avoid them due to their height. If you're using a changing table, always make sure the safety strap is securely fastened.
Alternatively, you can use a changing cushion. Place this cushion on the floor to change your baby's diaper. Some parents also use a soft surface, like a bed, with a changing mat. If you're using a soft surface like a sofa or bed, make sure your changing mat is large enough.
How to Change the Diaper
When changing the diaper, gently lay your baby on their back in a comfortable position. Open the straps of the diaper and carefully remove it from your baby. Fold it up and place it away from your baby. Use baby wipes or wet cotton to gently clean your baby’s genital area and bottom. Once clean, place the new diaper under your baby’s waist.
Apply any diaper cream, as recommended by your doctor, to the areas of your baby that were covered by the old diaper. Place the front of the new diaper on your baby’s tummy and fold the top to avoid irritation. The diaper should be snug but not too tight, as this could cause discomfort or even make your baby vomit. Once the diaper straps are secured, apply baby lotion to your baby’s legs and belly to moisturize.
Dispose of the used diaper and wash your hands thoroughly. Keep extra diapers handy to ensure you're never reusing the same diaper.
