A NEW ORDER AT HOME: MY BABY HAS STARTED WALKING

The rapidly advancing stages of a baby's growth become even more exciting with each new development. From their first meaningful glances and smiles to beginning to grasp and hold objects, each step of the way becomes a joyful moment to share with your baby—and of course, support them through it all.

So, when do babies start walking? After your baby turns one, you may begin to notice signs that they’re ready to stand on their own two feet. Once they've successfully mastered crawling, rolling, and scooting, and start to gain better balance, they will begin to stand and take their first steps. When your baby takes those initial steps, it’s the start of a brand new phase at home—the walking era!

As your baby begins to walk, some inevitable changes will occur in your home, in your routine, and in your baby’s daily rhythm. But the key here is—no panic! With a calm and adaptive approach, you’ll navigate this transition with ease.

Your Baby’s Routine Changes When They Start Walking

Your little one is no longer the baby who stays where you left them, quietly observing the world from a distance. Now a curious child on a mission to explore, your baby’s sleep and eating routines may change during this new stage of discovery.

Walking around the house, trying to run, and going from room to room suddenly seem much more appealing than napping. As a result, your baby may begin to resist daytime naps.

Likewise, feeding routines can be disrupted. A baby who once ate right on schedule may now reject meals in favor of exploration. Rather than reacting with frustration, respond with empathy and understanding. Rest assured—once your baby satisfies their curiosity about walking, they’ll likely return to their normal routine. During this phase, offering energy-rich fruits can help maintain your baby’s nutrition.

Safety Measures Are Essential When Your Baby Starts Walking

Some children take cautious, tentative steps, while others seem eager to run with all their energy right away. Regardless of their approach, all babies are prone to minor accidents during this exciting phase. Since they can’t yet be expected to watch out for household hazards, it’s your job to adjust your home to match your baby’s new mobility.

Start by identifying any potential dangers around the house. Tables that your baby can crawl under and get stuck, shelves with sharp corners, or ladders attached to bunk beds can pose real threats. Take steps to cushion, block, or remove these hazards as needed.

Pay close attention to electrical outlets and appliances. Now that your baby can reach many new places, everything within their grasp becomes a subject of interest. Use outlet covers and secure small objects that could be choking hazards by storing them in higher places. If your door handles are within your baby’s reach, consider using safety locks to prevent them from accessing certain rooms.

By turning your baby’s journey of discovery into a joyful experience, you’ll ensure both your happiness and theirs. Don’t forget to offer lots of encouragement and say “Well done!” whenever they master a new skill—your approval means the world to them.
